WHAT ARE YOU PUTTING ON YOUR SKIN
You have to really trust the source where your skin care products are formulated and manufactured, as there are no approvals require before skin care and cosmetics are sold to the public. Just because it is on the shelf, does not mean that the products contain only safe and healthy ingredients. Below is a list of 12 ingredients which are perhaps the most toxic to your health and yet are still in many skin care products:
| Ingredient | Common Use | Toxicity |
| Synthetic Fragrances – often contain PHTHALATES | Synthetic chemicals often used to stabilise fragrances | Phthalates are endocrine disrupters which mimic hormones and may alter genital development
| PARABENS | Used as a preservative in over 13,200 skin care products | Parabens are antimicrobial chemicals which mimic hormones and disrupt the endocrine system. Studies have shown they especially mimic estrogen and have a link to cancer
| MINERAL OIL, PARAFFIN & PETROLATUM | Are petroleum-based ingredients, derived from crude oil. They were originally used to speed up healing. | Petroleum-based ingredients form a barrier on the skin that does not allow it to breathe, can clog pores and build up toxins. They can slow cellular development, creating earlier signs of aging. There are also links to causing cancer.
| UREAS also known as diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate
Are preservatives | Ureas have the potential to release formaldehyde in very small amounts and are a cause of contact dermatitis |
| SODIUM LAUREL or LAURYL SULFATE (SLS), also known as SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) | Found in a large number of personal care products. They give cleansers, soaps and shampoos their lather-ability | They breakdown your skins moisture barrier, potentially leading to dry skin with premature aging. And because they easily penetrate your skin, they can allow other chemicals to pass through your skin easier. Sulfates can cause eye irritations and skin rashes. Nitrosamines maybe created when sulfates combined with other chemicals this can create potent carcinogens.
| 1,4-DIOXANE | Used as a stabiliser during manufacturing. Usually in products that lather-up. It is not necessary for it to be listed on ingredient lists. Dioxane is in ethoxylated compounds including Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Polyethylene glycol (often listed as PEG). To avoid it, skip any product with the following ingredients: myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth (or any other -eth), PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, or oxynol.
Dioxane is chemical carcinogen created by a process called ethoxylation, in which ethylene oxide, a known breast carcinogen, is added to other chemicals to make them less harsh.
| MEA/DEA/TEA | Used as foaming agents, sunthetic stabilizers and to adjust the pH of cosmetics. | MEA/DEA/TEA are ammonia compounds. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritations and dryness of the skin and hair.
| POLYACRYLAMIDE/ACRYLAMIDE | Used for it water absorbent properties and as a thikner. | Linked to mammary tumors in lad research. May damage the nervous system
| PROPYLENE GLYCOL | Used as a humectant, which causes retention of moisture. Also used as a carrier in fragrance oils. | May cause dermatitis and skin irritation. May inhibit skin cell growth. Linked to kidney damage and liver problems. Considered to be tetrogenic.
| SYNTHETIC COLOURS. Labeled as: FD&C OR D&C followed by a colour and a number. | Used to make products look more appealing. | They are made from coal tar and contain heavy metal salts. They may deposit toxins onto the skin causing skin sensitivity and irritation. They are shown to be carcinogenic in animal studies.
| PHENOL CARBOLIC ACID | Used in many skin care products | Can cause circulatory collapse, convulsions, paralysis, coma and even death from respiratory failure.
| TOLUENE | Found in most synthetic fragrances | Made from petroleum and tar products. Chronic exposure linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver and kidney damage. May effect a developing fetus |
It is a wise idea to go and check your skin care products for any of the above ingredients and avoid them in the future.
